The Skinny on Natural Skin Care:

It turns out beauty is more than skin deep: The average person slathers, lathers, rubs and sprays, 10 different skin care products on his or her body every day—and since our skin acts more like a sponge than a barrier, we absorb the nearly 130 chemicals we regularly expose ourselves to. Cosmetics companies and the FDA maintain that these chemicals are safe, and many of them are—in small doses at least. But consider that the average woman wears makeup every day, and you begin to understand how a little dab here a quick spray there begins to add up. The fact is, no one really knows how certain chemicals affect us over time, or how they react in our bodies in combination. Other chemicals have known dangers: Phthalates, for example, which are often found in artificial fragrances, are a class of hormone disruptor which can be linked to birth defects, sperm damage, infertility, and the feminization of baby boys, for instance.

Almost 90 percent of the 10,500 cosmetics and skin care ingredients known to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have not been evaluated for safety by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review, the FDA, or any other publicly accountable institution, according to the Environmental Working Group. To be fair, no one’s dropping dead after a using a mascara wand or a body wash, and manufacturers have an interest in creating products that don’t harm their customers. But complex chemicals with potential unknown side effects lead us to be precautionary. That is to say, if we’d prefer to err on the side of safety until we know. We’re not the only ones who feel this way: More than 1,110 personal-product ingredients have been banned for use in cosmetics in the European Union because of concerns that they may cause cancer, birth defects, or reproductive ills. By contrast only 10 are banned here in the U.S.

Make Sure “Natural” Is Really Natural
Toxic synthetic chemicals are the biggest issue in the beauty industry today, so it pays to hone a keen eye when it comes to examining product labels. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) establishes the regulations and standards in the United States regarding the manufacture of drugs & food. The problem is that they do not pay as much attention to skin care and make-up as they should, thereby allowing some very harmful chemicals to be used in creating almost every product that is mass marketed.

Some of the harmful ingredients that are used frequently in manufacturing the most common non-organic skin care and make-up items include:
– Mercury
– Dioxane
– Nitrosamines
– Cyclomethicone
– Ammonium Laureth Sulfate
– Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40)
– Polyethylene Glycol
– Polyethylene eth-

Ingredients that can be found in some products labeled natural but are actually anything but natural include:
– Polymethyl Methacrylate
– Trilaurin, Carbomer
– Sodium Citrate
– Dimethicone
– Phenoxyethanol
– Caprylyl Glycol
– Ethylhexylglycerin
– Hexylene Glycol

A great resource to consult when determining if a product is safe is the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database site, which rates popular cosmetics and personal-care products with hazard scores on a scale of
0 to 10, depending on their toxicity.

Say No to Fragrance
A loophole in federal law doesn’t require companies to declare any of the dozens of toxic chemicals that a single product’s fragrance mixture could contain. Artificial fragrances, which frequently contain phthalates, can also trigger allergic reactions and other health problems. Be mindful of the hidden dangers that “fragrance” or “parfum” listed on ingredients labels can pose, and always choose fragrance-free products.

Looking for a Natural & Organic way to Color your Hair? Take a look at Henna:

If you’re looking for an alternative to chemical-laden hair dyes – or if you just want shiny, bouncy hair – stop and take a long look at henna. It is a symbol of modern fashion to many women and men lately. Henna, popularly known as Mehandi is a hair coloring dimension used for hundreds of years. Throughout the expanse of time men and women have been alive, evidence can be found to indicate that from the moment we became aware of ourselves, we became interested in adorning and adjusting our appearance.  One of the ways in which we did this was by finding ways to color and adorn the hair. Archaeologists have found evidence to suggest that early man may have used minerals, plants and insects to paint their bodies and hair to appeal or repel. There is also recorded evidence from around 1500 B.C. that the Egyptians used henna as a hair coloring agent. This theme is echoed throughout our history as the color of the hair has been considered important. At the end of the 19th century, women of Istanbul and Smyrna used an estimated 15,000 pounds of henna annually as hair dye. Famous beauties such as Nefertiti and Cleopatra used henna to enhance their hair coloring. Ever wonder how Lucille Ball maintained her strawberry red locks over the years – yes she used Henna.

Henna is a plant that grows in the hot, dry climates of the Eastern hemisphere. For decades, women from North Africa, India, and the Middle East have used henna to stain their hair, skin, and nails. The red henna dye is contained within the leaves of the plant. After the plant is harvested, the leaves are dried, ground, and sifted into a flour-like powder. Henna is gentler on your hair than permanent hair color because it only deposits dye on to the surface, not inside the cortex.

Although most people would associate henna’s effect on the hair to changing or enhancing its color, henna can actually play a number of roles. Henna has been proven to increase the strength of the hair and therefore represents a safe natural dye that doesn’t permanently affect the health of our follicles. Henna helps seal the hair cuticle, preventing breaking, and increasing the shine and appearance of the hair. For people suffering from hair loss or baldness, henna can also inhibits this from happening.

Some benefits of henna for hair:
• Stronger strands/less breakage
• Balance hair porosity
• Reduces or eliminates dandruff
• Smooths hair cuticle giving hair
a healthy appearance
• Thickens hair
• Promotes growth due to antibacterial and antifungal properties
• Less shedding
• It is the best and safest way to color your hair that has no ammonia, chemicals, and toxins.
• Henna can be used to treat dandruff and scalp infections effectively.

Feng Shui For Life:

Feng Shui is the ancient practice of wind and water. It is a fun and inspiring way to explore different ideas to improve your life; bringing in greatness. Juli Edwards, owner of Healthy Life Salon in Boca Raton, can provide you with a Feng Shui Chart. Juli has been practicing Feng Shui since 2009. She has devised two different types of Feng Shui Charts. The first one is called a Feng Shui Full Analysis. This is discovering the correct placement of objects and furniture in your home or office as well as implementing complimentary colors and shapes that will truly enhance your well being. It will also significantly reduce accidents. When the Chi (auspicious energy) is able to flow and nourish a space, wonderful things happen. Clearing the clutter and freeing up the walkways in your space are a few simple ways to allow the Chi to flow. Getting rid of old, broken or worn out objects and removing electronics and appliances not being used are some other great ways to clear stagnant energy and replace it with auspicious energy. Having your Feng Shui Full Analysis Chart done is an excellent way to get complete with your life. It will open doors to new adventures and enjoyment. With good Feng Shui, you can achieve financial security, improve self esteem, and ultimately increase your quality of life. Juli Edwards will help you fine tune your home and provide many ideas to correct the inauspicious areas of your space to bring in divine energy. Using the correct colors and shapes in each area of your bagua chart will become the focus. A Full Analysis takes about two weeks to complete including (2) three hour home visits. Many times information that will be shared may be applied immediately however some may take months for a individual to complete. Patience and persistence are good practices and will reward you greatly. When the Chi is flowing, fantastic things happen. Less accidents occur. Wealth is acquired. Peace and Love abound.

A Full Analysis is $500 and includes square footage up to 2500. Additional fees will be applied for a space larger than 2500 square feet. Additional fees will also apply when more than one person is living or working in the space being analyzed. A chart of each person will be done separately. With good Feng Shui practice, ever changing energy is most desirable. Ebb and Flow becomes the natural process. A free flowing life becomes effortless.

Feng Shui can also be applied to the body, face, and hair. This is a Feng Shui Personal Profile. Each individual has their own element. Each element is unique. The five Feng Shui elements are metal, water, fire, wood, and earth. Each element has a place on the yin and yang symbol. Each has a desirable direction. Each has a variety of colors. Each has its own shape. When the personal chart is done, the individual will receive an interpretation of their chart done by Juli Edwards. Each analysis will include the information for the best colors, shapes, and personal element. Several examples will be shared to enhance your well being and immediately boost your confidence and style. Extraordinary things happen when this information is applied regularly. A Feng Shui personal profile is $100 and it includes a haircut and style (in harmony with your chart) and will be done by Juli Edwards. Experience the benefits of this pertinent and life changing information! Get yourself aligned with your greatness and your natural beauty.

Organic Gem in Downtown Boca Raton:

Excited to share the concept of natural hairstyling with Boca Raton, hair color specialist Juli Edwards, owner of Healthy Life Salon does long lasting hair color that covers gray hair without using ammonia and artificial fragrance. “You will be very pleased to go home looking fabulous and not smell like perfume. And, your hormones will be happy too! Artificial fragrances contain toxic ingredients that get into the bloodstream through the skin.” Dr. Anne Steinemann is an internationally recognized scientist who is dedicated to helping people live healthier lives and improve their working environments. She stated:

“In my epidemiological studies, I found that nearly 30% of the US population experiences adverse health effects when they are exposed to fragranced products.”(*)

There is a better way… Choose Organic!!” And that is easy to do when you get your hair and waxing services done at Healthy Life Salon. The American-made nose-friendly line called Shear Miracle Organics contains 100% natural/70% organic ingredients with NO artifical fragrances, preservatives and NO alcohol or silicone. The ingredient used to hold the hair is corn or rice (instead of damaging alcohol and silicone). The line is completely safe with flat ironing and of course its sulfate free and vegan. Gosh if you’re not interested yet, well let me wake you up with this one: Juli not only works on your hair, she can work on your house as well. Have your home Feng-Shui-ed and see what can happen to your life. Bring in love, prosperity, and good health. She will determine the best colors for your hair, wardrobe and home; best shapes for your haircuts as well as, the best directions to have your front door, location of your bed, and position of your stove. “Almost everything that is inauspicious can be corrected. It sometimes takes a little work, but will pay off in the end.”

Damage-free reusable human hair extensions are another great reason to go to Healthy Life Salon. “Quick installation, affordable maintenance, and the hair can last a year or more with proper care.” Juli explains, “Some women love to have their hair touch their backs; usually a person with the Feng Shui wood element. It’s a real part of them; like an appendage. As we mature, the hormone levels drop and the hair sometimes gets thinner in diameter and density. This Feng Shui type should consider extensions”. Whatever your element is, honor it. Each element has its own shape and colors. When you are wearing the colors specified in your chart, your confidence level increases and the magic happens! A person who has the element of water should consider wearing their hair curly or wavy. Or adding blue or aqua streaks to their hair will enhance their personality as well. Healthy Life Salon only uses European human hair extensions, which has the best most natural looking texture and the easiest to maintain at home.

The bright and tastefully remodeled 2 station holistic hair salon, known as Healthy Life Salon has an organic wine bar as well! Fun, beauty AND relaxation!
